Mrs Sue Snowdon, H.M. Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham

Role of the Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham

The fundamental principle concerning the office of Lord-Lieutenant is that the Lord-Lieutenant is Her Majesty's representative in the Lieutenancy area and it is her first and foremost duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. The Lord-Lieutenant promotes a good atmosphere and spirit of co-operation by the encouragement she gives to voluntary service and to benevolent organisations and by the interest she takes in the business, industrial and social life of her area.

Her key functions include:

  • Arranging visits by members of The Royal Family and to escort Royal visitors
  • To represent The Queen and present certain honours, medals and awards
  • To encourage the submission of worthy applications from people and organisations for nominations for honours and Queens Awards
  • To liaise with local units of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army, Royal Air Force and their associated Cadet Forces
  • To lead the local magistracy as Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the appointment of Justices of the Peace and liaise with the Ministry of Justice
  • Participate in civic, voluntary and social activities within the Lieutenancy area
